Dreams come true, from Cafe Tandoor

a cookbook to a vacation

Chuck Bradford of Columbus had a dream. He wanted to publish a cookbook designed especially for people living with AIDS. His dream was realized just days before his death from an AIDS-related illness.

Chuck's dream and the dream of three other people living with AIDS have been fulfilled with the help of Living Dreams of Ohio, a non-profit organization that focuses its energies and resources in helping people living with AIDS accomplish something that is important to them.

"We believe that focusing on the inner self of a person living with AIDS can be as beneficial as medication," said Brad Peterman, one of the founders of the organization and currently the vice-chair of its board of directors.

Peterman should know. His long-time roommate, who died as a result of AIDS, was the reason the group was conceived.

"As Jeff was getting sicker as a result of AIDS, he kept talking about this dream of going to small resort in Maine. We could all see that it was important to him and the thought of making the trip was helping to sustain him," Peterman said.

"There were no resources for granting someone a dream. Most groups that assist people living with AIDS struggle to provide just basic services."

"We turned to friends and found a lot of interest in this kind of endeavor, and Living Dreams of Ohio was established and registered with the state of Ohio," Peterman said. Unfortunately, the person that inspired the idea of the organization did not live long enough to be its first beneficiary.

“Jeff's death knocked the air out of us, and

efforts to completely get Living Dreams off the ground stalled a couple of months," Peterman said. “But we quickly refocused and completed all steps necessary to make the group a bona fide non-profit."

Publishing the cookbook was the group's first official "dream." Several volunteers from Living Dreams spent hours preparing Chuck's recipes that were on note cards, sheets of notebook paper and small scraps so it could be published.

Today the cookbook is available to people living with AIDS and is being sold to others to help raise funds so additional dreams can be granted.

"While we work to get part or all of a dream donated, we also must have funds to pay for things we can't get for free," Peterman said.

So far the group has been able to grant a dream to a person that wanted to see and meet country music singer Aaron Tippen, enable a person to spend a week at an Ohio state park, and help another person go on a vacation to New Mexico with friends.

"As people hear about Living Dreams of Ohio we are getting more applications. In order to help these dream come true we need the generous contributions of others," Peterman says.

Assistance from Living Dreams of Ohio is open to all Ohio residents with a confirmed diagnosis of AIDS in accordance with the guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control.

Anyone wishing to make a contribution to Living Dreams of Ohio can mail their gift to Living Dreams of Ohio, P.O. Box 15186, Columbus 43215.
